Vision boards, motivational quotes, positive affirmations, gratitude journals, uplifting seminars. I am pretty sure we have ALL seen this somewhat recent trend, which I have termed the ‘positivity movement’ appear somewhere in our lives. Be it a friend has recently brought a gratitude journal, or a family member who has motivational quotes in their kitchen, or we have recently decided to join this very popular way of thinking, and the behaviours that stem from it...
There are quotes all over social media, on how to create a life full of happiness, including one from myself, “Beauty and happiness are everywhere; it is up to you to see beauty, and you to create happiness from within.” Since I turned 30, I have taken this massive self-discovery journey, learning the meaning of being happy or my interpretation of happy, and realising that you have to create your own happiness. You cannot have a list of things and think, when I do ‘x’ and ‘x’ I will be happy, as guess what, that is not going to make you happy. You have to decide to be happy, be happy now! Enjoy the process in where you are going in life, be it studying, working, raising a family etc. Yes, the common thought is, but if I was rich, I would be happy. Yes, I am sure money may help you to be less unhappy, but it definitely does not necessarily mean you will be happy. As Tony Robbins says, “Health is the ultimate wealth”. Oh how true that is!
What took me on this random discovery of happiness, positivity, etc. all began with been gifted the book “The Magic” by Rhonda Byrne. Everything I read I already practised or I totally believed in. I was so excited. It is all about visualisation, truly feeling like you have what you want in life and being sincerely grateful. Then just wait and see what manifests in front of you. It is really quite crazy. A friend of mine Corinne Austin from Fit Fix Fitness Specialists explained my thought process perfectly recently, “creating the life you want through visualisation, and sending energy towards that.” I could not have said it any better myself!
Now, vision boards, I think these are a great idea, mind is there to regularly remind me what I want to achieve in life. Your goals can change, so don’t stress about it. We don’t have a personal motivator following us around all day, so do it to yourself. Remind yourself regularly that you can do this. Shit doesn’t just happen; you have to make it happen. I always remember reading this quote years ago “Do shit, stuff happens”, so true!
Quite possibly the best video I have watched on Facebook recently, is one by Sarah Knight, titled “Don’t give a f**k”. OK, yes it is full of swear words, so do not watch in front of the kids, but DO watch it; the meaning behind it is amazing! You will finish watching it and think, she is so right, time to consult my “f**K budget”. My girlfriends and me now refer to the video all the time, “is that in the f**k budget this week?” In short, the message from this video is, stop spending time, energy, and money on things you do not give a f**k about. Which of course will lead to a happier more fulfilled life!
If you want to start somewhere, but don’t know where to begin, Awesome Inc. is where you need to go. Have a look at their stuff online at www.awesomeendsin.me. You can buy many different types of gratitude journals that encourage you to think about and write down things in your life that you are grateful for.
Somewhere else I have been finding this positivity movement, is yoga. I am a recent yogi convert, so maybe it has been around the whole time and I have been oblivious to it. Or just let it go in one ear and out the other, thinking “those crazy cats”. But each session I have been to, at The Loft here in Whangarei, has truly been inspirational and uplifting. The topics have ranged from joyfulness, positivity, gratefulness, and dealing with change and how to let go. I highly recommend attending one of their classes. Be open minded, and see how you feel when you finish one of their sessions? It may be the start of your self-discovery!
If you would like to discuss any points I have raised in this article, please feel free to contact me. This is something I am truly passionate about, and believe you too can create your ultimate life through the power of positivity, and hard work of course! “Dreams don’t work unless you do”. Nicci xx
